Laura Mooney

Laura Mooney begins her ninth season on the Women's Soccer coaching staff in the Fall of 2014, after having previously served as an assistant coach in 2005, and head coach of the program from 2007 through 2014.

She currently has the best winning percentage of any coach in the program’s history and has the most wins for any of the female sport programs offered at Maritime.

After her arrival in 2006 as an assistant coach with the program, Mooney was promoted to head coach in 2007. Since then, the team has grown both technically and tactically each season. Her best season at the helm of the program came in 2013, when the program became the first of any women's program at Maritime to finish at the .500 mark or better with a 10-10-0 record that year, which included a program record four-match winning streak from August 31 to September 14.

In addition to her role with the soccer program, Mooney serves as the Associate Athletic Director for Administration and is responsible for all finance matters relating to the Department of Athletics. She also serves as the Senior Woman Administrator where she advises on recruitment and retention for all the women’s sport programs at Maritime. She also focuses on enhancing the student-athlete experience and well-being as well as ensuring equality and compliance with Title IX issues.

Mooney mentored freshman Jorrie Trenkamp who became the program’s first player to earn a postseason recognition, as she was named to the All-Skyline Conference first team player in 2013, following two previous seasons as an All-Skyline Conference second team performer for her 2009 and 2011 seasons. Also in 2009, Trenkamp was also honored by receiving the SUNY Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award, the highest award given to a student-athlete that recognizes a combination of outstanding academic and athletic achievement.

Mooney’s coaching credentials include a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Advanced National Diploma as well as a NSCAA Advanced Goalkeeping Diploma.  Mooney has been on the coaching staff of numerous youth teams over the past fifteen years and has also coached at various soccer camps including the University of Notre Dame.  Mooney also serves on the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee and as a site rep for the NCAA DIII Women’s Soccer National Championship.

After graduating from Potsdam in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in Art Studio, Mooney earned her master’s degree in Sports Administration & Management from Cortland in 2009.  She will also look to earn her PhD in the years to come.
