Throggs Neck, NY – Junior
Brian Ochs (Sayville, NY/Sayville) (Sayville, NY/Sayville) had an incredible showing this past weekend, demolishing the competition with two major decisions and one tech fall in four matches against some of the best wrestlers on the east coast. Ochs’ only loss on the day came against a Division I grappler, Matthew DeNichilo of Princeton University. Ochs was named the Team MVP, which was awarded to the best grappler from each team, and now stands at 10-3 on the year.
Hosted at New York University, Maritime faced off against Trinity College, Princeton University, Western New England College and Williams College. On the day, Ochs would be one of three members of the team to be awarded decisions. Sophomore
Chase Crawford (Mandeville, LA/Brother Martin) (Mandeville, LA/Brother Martin), had a 14-0 decision over William Moyet of Trinity, while junior
Ben Towers (Valley Cottage, NY/) (Valley Cottage, NY) had a 8-7 decision over Niko Harovas of Trinity as well. However, this could have been the final win for Towers of the season as in the next match against Princeton, he suffered a serious shoulder injury which resulted in a medical forfeit. Towers’ status will be reevaluated later in the week, but the initial report would see him missing the remainder of the season.
The Privateer wrestling team will now get a much needed break as the end of the semester draws near, giving the student-athletes an opportunity to prepare for final examinations. This break will also be key for a select few who are currently recovering from injuries sustained so far this season. Coach Medina will look to guide his team into a successful second half of their season as he expects to once again be at full strength.
