Throggs Neck, NY – The Norwich Lady Cadets came into tonight's game with a eight game win streak and had no problem increasing it to nine game after an easy win over the undermanned Privateers of Maritime College Monday night in women's basketball action. Norwich now improves to a 10-1 record on the year and has not lost since their first game against Coast Guard back on November 19th.
The Lady Cadets broke ahead early in this game with a 18-2 lead with about just five minutes past in the first half. They held a 49-11 lead at the half after preventing Maritime from scoring a basket for well over ten minutes. Sophomore forward Kristi Powlovich (Jericho, VT/Mount Mansfield) led the way for the Lady Cadets in the first with 14 points shooting a perfect 7-of-7 from the field. She would go onto score a team high of 16 points in only 15 minutes of play.
The story stayed the same in the second half as the Privateers were shutdown to only seven points. All fifteen players that suited up for Norwich scored at least two points and had three in double-digits. Aside from team leader Powlovich, the Lady Cadets were led by senior forward Kim Sweeney (Fair Haven, VT/Fair Haven) with 13 points and senior forward Miranda Perras (Mooers, NY/NE Clinton Central) topped things off with ten points. Freshman guard Caitlin Bailey (Barre, VT/Spaulding) had a team high of 12 rebounds, eight of which were offensive and junior point guard Allison Flynn (Salem, MA/Salem) had nine assists and seven points.
Freshman forward Jeanette Golson (Brooklyn, NY/Transit Tech) had a career high of six points for the Privateers along with five rebounds and two blocks. Senior guard Kerri Herrmann (Central Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) had eight rebounds, while junior center Alissa Bello (Rockaway, NY/Poly Prep) added six rebounds and five points in the loss.
It has been a rough season for the Privateers who now stand at seven active members to finish out the year. They hope to pick up their first win soon, and face some comparable competition on Saturday when they travel to Patchogue to take on the Golden Eagles of Saint Joseph's. However before then, they will face Briarcliffe College on Thursday January 13th in a 6pm game.
