Former Privateer Dan Hesse Named To ICSA 2009 All-Academic Sailing Team

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 15, 2009) – The Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) recognized 20 outstanding scholar athletes on Thursday with their selection to the 2009 ICSA All-Academic Sailing Team. Among them was former Maritime skipper Dan Hesse (Bohemia, NY/Connetquot).

The honor acknowledges the success at the highest levels – both on the water and in the classroom – of the men and women who were nominated by their respective schools for academic and athletic performance during the 2008-09 academic year.

Hesse was one of ten All-Academic Sailing First Team members. Upon graduation from Maritime in the spring of 2009, the Bohemia, N.Y. native served the first half of the fall 2009 semester as the assistant sailing coach here at his alma mater.

The 2009 ICSA All-Academic Team recognizes student-athletes who maintained a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 on a scale of 4.00, were a key starter or reserve member of their school's sailing team, and who had reached junior standing at his or her institution of learning in order to be considered eligible for this distinction.

“Selection to the First Team acknowledges an emphasis on academic achievement,” said ICSA President Mitch Brindley. “These individuals have met a certain balance between sailing on a competitive team and academic excellence.”

ICSA is the governing authority for sailing competition at colleges and universities throughout the United States and some parts of Canada and is comprised of seven North American Conferences within established geographic regions: Middle Atlantic (MAISA), Midwest (MCSA), New England (NEISA), Northwest (NWICSA), Pacific Coast (PCIYRA), South Atlantic (SAISA), and Southeastern (SEISA).  Each conference schedules and runs local and intersectional events, including Conference Championships that ultimately qualify teams for the ICSA National Championships.  For more information on ICSA and college sailing, please visit www.collegesailing.org.
