THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 3, 2009) – An awakened Maritime rugby team ran on the field and was all business today, defeating Wagner, 52-10, on Reinhart Field in the 2009 fall home-finale. With the win, the Privateers improve to 4-1 on the season and remain in third place in the Metropolitan New York Rugby Football Union standings, while the Seahawks fall to 3-2.
Within seconds of the kickoff, Salka ran through the Wagner pack and dove over the Seahawks’ tacklers for Maritime’s first try. Papson converted and the ruggers of Maritime never looked back. Trys from Toomey and Delano, and Papson's two conversions had the Privateers ahead at the end of the first half, 19-0.
Maritime lost no time in the second half with two trys from Alfisi and one each from Papson and Cotton. Papson had two more conversions to end Maritime scoring. In the final minutes of the game, Wagner scored two trys and play ended with Maritime on top, 52-10.
The Maritime ruggers become “Road Warriors” as they play the rest of the season on the road. The Privateers return to action next Sunday, Oct. 11, as they take on Montclair State, who is tied for first place with William Patterson with 4-0 record. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
