THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Nov. 16, 2009) – As the fall athletic seasons come to an end, Maritime College has compiled the top overall sportsmanship rating (.695) in the race for the 2009-10 Skyline Conference Sportsmanship Trophy, as announced by the conference on Friday. The announcement comes on top of the Privateers having already earned Team Sportsmanship Awards for men’s and women’s cross country earlier this month. Two seasons still remain, as the winter sports are beginning now and the spring sports commence at the end of February.
“This is a great acknowledgement for our athletics department and Maritime College as a whole,” said athletics director Dick Hack. “After finishing the 2008-09 year fourth in the conference for the Skyline Sportsmanship Trophy, we realized there were many areas to improve on to enhance the image of our institution and we addressed them. Our staff has put forth great efforts to make sure the importance of sportsmanship is known to all of our student-athletes, using the overall mission of our college as their guidelines. We understand that the year is only a third of the way through, but we will continue to work hard to stay atop the conference.”
A school earns points toward the Sportsmanship Trophy based upon a 10-point scale in each sport. Opposing coaches rate each team on a scale of 1 to 10 with a ‘1’ being considered poor sportsmanship and a ‘10’ being considered outstanding sportsmanship. A score of 5 to 6 is considered average. A school’s scores in each sport are then added together and then divided by the total number of points that could possibly be earned.
Maritime compiled 34.77 points out of a possible 50 (5 sports) for a rating of .695. Bard College was second (.674), The Sage Colleges was third (.6722) and Yeshiva University was fourth (.6718). Yeshiva has captured the Skyline Conference Sportsmanship Trophy each of the past two years.
A Team Sportsmanship Award is presented in each sport. Maritime received the Team Sportsmanship Awards in women’s cross country (7.33 rating) and men’s cross country (7.67).
