Oehl Named ECFC Defensive Player Of The Week

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Nov. 9, 2009) – The Eastern Collegiate Football Conference  (ECFC) announced on Monday that Maritime senior co-captain Mike Oehl-LB (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown West) was named the Week Ten ECFC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Privateers' season-ending loss to Gallaudet, 16-13, this past Friday night at Reinhart Field.

 

In his last collegiate game, Oehl led all players as he was all over the field with 18 tackles. He had 17 solo tackles and two assisted, and two of his tackles were for combined losses of five yards. The senior finished the season ranked second on the team with 56.5 tackles (51 solo and 11 assisted) and had seven of his tackles for combines losses of 17 yards. He also had one breakup, one pass defended, forced one fumble and blocked one kick that he returned for a touchdown.

 

The Maritime football team finished the 2009 campaign with a program best 6-4 record, including a 3-3 record in ECFC action. The Privateers remained in contention for playing in their first-ever Conference Championship game up until the very last week of the season, a feat never achieved before in school history.
