Third-year head coach Andrew McCarthy led the Maritime men’s soccer team to a respectable 10-7-1 record in 2009, including a 4-3-1 Skyline Conference record and an appearance in the Skyline Tournament for the program’s third-consecutive year. The squad came out of the gate winning its first three games and finished September with a 6-3 record. The Privateers rode the momentum of winning their final three conference contests into the Skyline Tournament, but were defeated at home, 1-0, in the second overtime of the quarterfinals match against NYU-Poly on a controversial penalty kick call. Nonetheless, Maritime finished the 2009 campaign with its third winning season in the past five years.

The Privateers were led by first-year sophomore Cesur Alagoz, who was named to the all-Skyline Conference First Team and earned Rookie of the Week honors a conference-high three times during the season. Alagoz finished the 2009 campaign with a team-high nine goals (seventh in the Skyline), six assists (tied for fifth in the Skyline with classmate Jason Tursi) and 24 points (sixth in the Skyline).

Three Maritime players were named to the all-Skyline Second Team: junior goalkeeper Harris Papson, junior defender Andrew Rahner and sophomore midfielder Tom Federico. Papson was solid as starting keeper for the Privateers for the third-straight year. He led the conference with a 1.02 goals against average and his .810 save percentage tied for fourth in the Skyline. Rahner, who earned an all-conference nod for the third-straight year was part of a backfield that contributed to Maritime being tied for first in the league with just 1.22 goals allowed per game. Federico, a natural playmaker, finished the season tied for second on the team with 14 points (five goals and four assists).

On top of Alagoz’s three Rookie of the Week honors, Maritime had a player earn weekly honors in all but three weeks of the season. Sophomore forward John Blunden (seven goals for 14 points on the year) and Papson were each named Skyline Player of the Week once, while Alagoz, Papson, senior James Salka and sophomore William Smith were all named to the weekly honor roll once.
