The Maritime rugby team finished the fall 2009 season with an even 4-4 record and a fourth place finish in Division III of the Metro New York Rugby Football Union. The Privateer ruggers exploded out to a 3-0 start, but faced a tougher schedule the rest of the way, including the top three teams in the conference the last three weeks.
In the middle of the season, Maritime defeated its local-rival from across the Long Island Sound, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, in a 20-minute friendly scrimmage, 5-0.
Maritime received tremendous contributions all season long from co-captains Christian Ciferri (Westport, Conn./Staples) and Jared O'Haire as well as grad. students Peter Rose (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xavier) and Thomas Toomey (Queens, NY/Xavier) and senior James Salka (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville). The Privateers will return to the pitch in the Spring 2010 season.
