PURCHASE, N.Y. (Feb. 6, 2009) -
The Maritime men's swimming team captured its third straight Skyline Conference Championship Saturday at SUNY Purchase. The Privateers, who ended the regular season with a 6-3 record, were a perfect 3-0 in Skyline action this year. Freshman Joseph Tucker (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun ) was named the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year and head coach Peter Vecchio earned the Coach of the Year award at the conclusion of the event.
Maritime won six individual events and both relays on Saturday. The Privateers compiled 199 points, nearly doubling the total of second-place Mount Saint Mary (102), using superior depth across the board to rack up points in every event.
Five different Maritime swimmers were named to the all-conference first team: junior Joseph Cooney (Cranford, N.J./Union Catholic), sophomore Ryan Luschinger, sophomore Jonathan DaSilva (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville), Tucker, and junior captain Brian Day (Paramus, N.J./Paramus). Luschinger earned four first-team nods, winning two individual events (the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:08.84 and the 50 yard freestyle in 22.82) and both relay events. Tucker was a part of the 200 medley relay team with Cooney, Luschinger and DaSilva that started the day off with a win in 1:46.23. The freshman then won two individual events – the 200 yard freestyle in 1:58.74 and the 100 yard freestyle in 51.74 – and the last relay event en route to being named Rookie of the Year.
DaSilva also won two individual events and both relay events: capturing first in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:08.87 and winning the 100 yard butterfly in 55.95. Day teamed up with DaSilva, Tucker and Luchsinger to win the 400 yard freestyle relay in a time of 3:30.69, a mark that set a new conference championship record.
Day and Cooney were also on the all-conference second team along with junior Joseph Bosch (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) and freshmen Arthur Seamen and Leonard Hudson (Freeport, Bahamas/Jack Hayward).
The Maritime women's team placed two swimmers on the all-conference second team: junior Caroline Hickey (New Orleans, La./DeLasalle) for the 200 yard backstroke and sophomore Brisa Garrido (Boca Raton, Fla./Chattahoochee) in the 200 yard breaststroke.
