THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 2, 2010) – Maritime senior Andre Cooper (Baltimore, Md./Southwestern) was selected to the All-Skyline Men's Basketball First Team, as announced by commissioner Tracy King on Tuesday, after voting by all 11 conference coaches. The accolade comes after Cooper led the Privateers to a 19-8 overall record in 2009-10, the best finish in recent program history, including a 14-6 Skyline record and a semifinal appearance in the conference tournament.
"We're very happy to see Andre recognized as one of the top players in the Skyline Conference," said third-year head coach Jody King. "His contribution to this program will be surely missed. We are proud of his accomplishments and wish him all the best in the future. As he moves forward, he will always remain a Privateer in our hearts."
The Baltimore, Md., native was Maritime's leading scorer with 16.3 points per game, a mark that ranked fifth among all Skyline players. Cooper also ranked second on the Privateers and seventh in the conference with 3.46 assists per game. His 36.5 minutes played led the squad, while his 5.4 rebounds per game ranked third.
The 6-2, 165-pounder recorded 20-or more points a team-high eight times during the season, including his career-high 30 points against Mount Saint Mary on Jan. 12, and has led the team in scoring on nine occasions. He also registered three double-doubles on the season: Feb. 9 vs. Berkeley (20 points, 10 rebounds), Feb. 23 vs. Farmingdale State (20 points, 12 rebounds) and Feb. 26 at Old Westbury (12 points, 10 rebounds).
During the 2009-10 campaign, Cooper was named the Skyline men's basketball Player of the Week once on Dec. 7 and earned a spot on the weekly honor roll five times: Nov. 23, Feb. 1, Feb. 15, Feb. 23 and March 1.
Cooper led the Privateers to a No. 4 seed in the Skyline Conference Championships after a 14-6 league record during the regular season. Maritime ended the 2009-10 season with a loss in the semifinals to top-ranked Old Westbury, 61-46, on Friday, Feb. 26.
