THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 22, 2010) – The Metropolitan Basketball Writers’ Association announced on Wednesday that Maritime senior guard Andre Cooper (Baltimore, Md.) was named to the All-Met Third Team among Division III schools in the Metropolitan Area. The accolade comes after Cooper led the Privateers to a 19-8 record, their best in recent history, including a 14-6 mark in Skyline Conference play.
Maritime’s leading scorer with 16.3 points per game during the 2009-10 campaign, Cooper ranked fifth among all Skyline players in that category. The 6-2, 165-pounder also ranked second on the Privateers and seventh in the conference with 3.46 assists per game. His 36.5 minutes played led the squad, while his 5.4 rebounds per game ranked third.
Cooper registered three double-doubles on the season: Feb. 9 vs. Berkeley (20 points, 10 rebounds), Feb. 23 vs. Farmingdale State (20 points, 12 rebounds) and Feb. 26 at Old Westbury (12 points, 10 rebounds). He also recorded 20-or more points a team-high eight times during the season, including his career-high 30 points against Mount Saint Mary on Jan. 12, and led the team in scoring nine different occasions.
The Baltimore, Md. native also earned a spot on the All-Skyline Conference First Team as voted on by the conference coaches in March. During the 2009-10 campaign, Cooper was named the Skyline men’s basketball Player of the Week once on Dec. 7 and landed on the weekly honor roll five times: Nov. 23, Feb. 1, Feb. 15, Feb. 23 and March 1.
Cooper led the Privateers to a No. 4 seed in the Skyline Conference Championships, their third straight appearance in the tournament. Maritime ended the 2009-10 season with a loss in the semifinals to top-ranked Old Westbury, 61-46, on Friday, Feb. 26.
