THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 6, 2010) – Two members of the Maritime football team received weekly player of the week honors from the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) for their roles in the Privateers 15-12 season-opening home win over Mass. Maritime in the Fourth Annual Chowder Bowl on Thursday, Sept. 2 at Reinhart Field. Sophomore Keith Barnes-LB (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) was named the ECFC Defensive Player of the Week, while freshman Thomas Davis-KR/RB (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) earned Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Barnes was all over the field Thursday night, recording a game-high 17 tackles (14 solo and 3 assisted), including one for a loss of eight yards. He is no stranger to ECFC Defensive Player of the Week nods, as he earned the accolade a conference-best three times during the season in 2009.
Davis was instrumental in setting up the final game-winning drive for the Privateers. After Mass. Maritime scored to go ahead 12-7 late in the fourth quarter, Davis return the ensuing kickoff 22 yards, setting up great field position for the Privateers at their own 42-yard line. He later went on to score the go-ahead touchdown on a five-yard run with 4:21 to play in the game.
