Sailing Weekend Preview: Sept. 17-18

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 16, 2011) – It has been a busy week for the Maritime sailing team, as news came out on Thursday that the program has entered the Top 25 Poll released by Sailing World. The Privateers checked in as the #14 team in the nation after the first week of sailing last weekend.

The team is also preparing for two dinghy events and one offshore event this coming weekend, Sept. 17-18. The Privateers will be hosting the Maritime Fall Open here in the East River right off the shore of campus on Saturday and Sunday. Taking part in the home event for the Privateers will be Scott Lubliner (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) and Jamileh Soueidan (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) (Virginia/Walsingham Academy) in A division and Julia Paxton (Sebastopol, Calif./Analy) (Sebastopol, Calif./Analy) and John Burke (Warwick, Md./St. Marks) (Warwick, Md./St. Mark's) in B division.

Travelling over to the Nevins Trophy Regatta, hosted by Kings Point, will be the top team of Shawn Murray (Annapolis, Md./Archbishop Spaulding) (Annapolis, Md./Archbiship Spaulding) and Morgan Poulos Keating (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) in A division, Harry Scott (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis Senior) and Emma Lamontagne (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) in B, and Randy Hartranft (Bayville, N.J./Lakeville Prep) in C division (singlehanded). Mike Vermilyea (Bellport, N.Y./St. John the Baptist Diocesan) and Matt Schoene (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck Senior) (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck Senior) will go to the event as alternates.

The offshore event, the Shields Trophy Regatta, will be held at Navy in Annapolis, Md. The event will be the first of three Navy 44 events on their schedule and a warm-up for the Macmillan Cup on October 22-23. Travelling to Maryland for Maritime will be Taylor Walker, Owen Wing, Nick Berger, Randy Schiffelbein, Dan McDonald, James Dempsey, Eric White, and Christine Hogan.
