THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Jan. 30, 2012) – Following the success of last season's Brothers Blog, the Maritime men's lacrosse team will be right back at it this year, offering a inside look at the team from a player's perspective with the all new Southern Swag Blog: Featuring Wess Johnson (Elgin, S.C./Heath Wood Hall).

A native of Elgin, S.C., Johnson will begin his second season at attack for the Privateers in 2012. During his freshman year in 2011, he saw action in nine games, registering two goals and two assists. He scored his first career goal at home against Plattsburgh State on March 12. Johnson helped Maritime to a 7-9 overall record and a semifinal appearance in the Skyline Conference Tournament.

Wess will be checking in with MaritimeAthletics.com throughout the preseason and regular season with blog updates twice a week that will give followers an inside look of what's going on in his life both on and off the field.

I have to admit I never really understood the term 'student athlete'. I just think as a student you manage athletics and academics. Not always easy to do, but I know all of us on the lacrosse team can relate. Being on the lacrosse team is as much a part of our college experience as going to class, heading out on sea term or being in the regiment. It is what we do, it is who we are. We work hard to get good grades and win games.

Time management is the name of game to be successful. And we have our share of successful students. Just a quick look at the names listed on the Admirals' and Dean's List. It is hard to use your sport as an excuse for poor grades when you have examples like Dylan Larmony (Old Bethpage, N.Y./Plainview JFK). I'd also like to make a shout out to our first class on the team who will be taking and completing tests for their coast guard licenses. We wish them the best of luck! There are certainly a lot of 'students' on this team that set a great example of managing athletics and academics.

If it means coming from class in khakis or a boiler suit, you hustle to practice. When class time is missed to travel to an away game, you figure out how to get the notes or take a make-up exam. Not to mention the 6 days a week of practice that equates to 20+ hours that takes away from study time. All just a part of the athletics and academics that makes us great students at Maritime!
