THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Jan. 24, 2013) – On Thursday, Maritime College Athletic Director
Heather MacCulloch announced that
Alice Kahrs will be joining the Athletic Department staff as the women's volleyball head coach. Kahrs comes to Maritime after recent assistant coaching stints at her alma mater, SUNY Cortland, Hunter College and SUNY New Paltz.
“I am very pleased that Alice has joined our athletic staff as the head women's volleyball coach,” commented MacCulloch. “I am confident that her experience and positive nature working with student-athletes in many facets will lead the Lady Privateers to success both on and off the court.”
For the past three seasons as an assistant at SUNY Cortland, Kahrs was responsible for all skill development for the volleyball program, with a strong emphasis on blocking footwork and technique. She also aided in the decision making of player management and game strategy, practice planning, match strategy, scouting opponents, recruiting and strength and conditioning. Kahrs further facilitated the Red Dragons' program by arranging travel and lodging, academic tutoring, breaking down game film, keeping statistics and fundraising. She is also a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).
“I would to thank Ms. MacCulloch and the search committee for the opportunity to be a part of the unique experience at SUNY Maritime as the women's volleyball head coach,” said Kahrs. “I am excited to be a part of a passionate athletic department with a high commitment to their student athletes. The past five years of assisting have all led up to this moment and I cannot wait to get started and take this program to a new level of excellence.”
Kahrs was a four-year letter-winner and two-year captain of the Cortland volleyball team from 2004-07 and left the school ranked sixth on the program's career total blocks leader board and seventh in career solo blocks. She helped guide the Red Dragons to four-straight SUNYAC Conference Championships and NCAA Tournament appearances and the team was ranked as high as 17th nationally during her time with the program. She was named to the SUNYAC All-Conference Team following the 2007 season.
At Cortland, Kahrs was a member of the SUNYAC Commissioner's List for academic excellence. She was also a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and recently served as an advisor to the committee while serving as the assistant volleyball coach.
Kahrs' additional experience includes coaching various club teams around Long Island and working at numerous high school and college camps, including the Penn State Volleyball Sports Camp and the Kings Park High School Volleyball Camp. She has also served as the Assistant Volleyball Camp Director for Cortland since 2010, where she helped to run a two-week camp program.
Kahrs earned a bachelor's degree in speech and language disabilities in 2008 and recently completed coursework for a master's degree in sports management, also from Cortland. She is a native of Kings Park, N.Y., in Suffolk County, Long Island, where she currently resides.
