Sailing Weekend Recap: Valente Wins Laser North Singlehand Qualifier; Privateers Finish In 12th At Harry Anderson Regatta

        THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 17, 2013) – The Maritime coed dinghy sailing team took part in two events this past weekend – the Laser North 1 hosted by Kings Point off the north shore of Long Island and the Harry Anderson Inter-Conference Regatta hosted by Yale in Branford, Conn.
 
        Below is fifth-year head coach Russ O'Reilly's recaps of the events:
 
Laser North 1 – Hosted by Kings Point – Kings Point, N.Y.
        Three of Maritime's singlehanded specialists traveled across the sound to Kings Point to compete in the Laser North qualifier, looking to finish in the top six of 20 boats overall at the end of the event to earn a berth to the MAISA Conference Singlehanded Championships at KP on October 12-13. Maritime was represented by sophomore Nick Valente (Charleston, S.C./Wando) (Charleston, S.C./Wando), junior Matt Schoene (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck Senior) (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck Senior), and freshman Ben Wilkinson (Noank, Conn./Fishers Island School) (Noank, Conn./Fishers Island School).
 
        Valente sailed an extremely strong series, winning the 18-race regatta by 20 points and leading nearly from start to finish. Schoene battled throughout and earned a 4th place overall finish by winning the 18th and final race to ensure his qualifying position overall. Wilkinson finished just outside the qualifying spots in his first collegiate regatta and is hungry to get back on the water again. Harry Anderson Inter-Conference Regatta – Hosted by Yale – Branford, Conn.
        Maritime traveled to Yale to compete in the Harry Anderson Inter-Conference Regatta this weekend, one of the top early-season events in the country and a strong test for the sailors to start the season. Sailing for the team at Yale was Julia Paxton (Sebastopol, Calif./Analy) (Sebastopol, Calif./Analy)/Paige Conlin (Bellport, N.Y./St. Anthony's) (Bellport, N.Y./St. Anthony's) in A division and Mike Carr (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park)/Andrew Roberson (Oriental, N.C./Arendell Parrott Academy) (Oriental, N.C./Arendell Parrott Academy) in B division.
 
        The team battled throughout the 14-race series in each division and finished in 12th place overall out of a strong 18-team field. The Privateers tallied twelve top 10 race finishes and will bring home many valuable lessons from the country's best. Paxton and Conlin sailed a strong series to finish in 11th place in A division, while Carr and Roberson finished 13th in B division.
