THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 21, 2010) – Maritime freshman Trevor Canella (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) was named the Skyline Conference Baseball Rookie of the Week for his pitching performances in two games last week. This is the hurler’s second time being honored by the conference as he earned a spot on the honor roll last week.
Canella pitched a scoreless inning of relief against Lehman in the Privateers’ 12-1 victory over the Lightning at home on Wednesday. He then started against Mount Saint Mary in a road game played at Reinhart Field on Saturday. The 6-0, 175-pounder tossed a seven-inning complete-game against the Blue Knights allowing just three runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out two. He picked up his second career victory in as many starts, as Maritime rallied from behind to win, 5-3.
As a staff, the Maritime pitchers rank fourth in the Skyline Conference with a 6.14 earned run average. Junior Ryan Simpson (Levittown, N.Y.) and sophomore Jonathan Proscia (Franklin Square, N.Y.) also rank among the league’s top statistical categories. Simpson’s 206 putouts ranks third, while Proscia’s 19 stolen bases is good for second in the Skyline.
