THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (May 13, 2010) – Earlier this month, four Maritime student-athletes were honored by the State University of New York (SUNY) as recipients of the 2009-10 SUNY Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award for their respective sports. Graduating-senior Robert Johnson, Jr. (Merrit Island, FL/Merrit Island (FL)) (Merrit Island, Fla.) from the football team, rising-senior Brian Day (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) (Paramus, N.J.) from the men's swimming team, rising-senior Alexander Korb (Islip, N.Y./Islip) (Islip, N.Y.) from the men's lacrosse team and rising-sophomore Jorrie Trenkamp (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) (Tabernacle, N.J.) from the women's lacrosse team have all received letters and plaques from SUNY in recognition of their outstanding achievements.

The Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award is the highest award given to a student-athlete in the State University. The award recognizes a combination of outstanding academic excellence and superior athletic achievement. In order to be considered for the award, student-athletes had to be nominated by their campus. Nominees then had their academic credentials and athletic accomplishments reviewed by athletic directors across the State University System. Recipients of the award have an average GPA of 3.63.

From the football team, co-captain Robert Johnson, Jr. (Merrit Island, FL/Merrit Island (FL)) was a four-year letterwinner and was one of ten seniors to play all four years with the Privateers since they rejoined the NCAA back in 2006. Johnson, Jr. was a first team all-Eastern Collegiate Football Conference selection after the 2009 season and was named the 2009-10 Maritime College Male Athlete of the Year. He was inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma National Honor Society and graduated earlier this month with a bachelor of science in marine transportation, while also earning a third mate's license from the U.S. Coast Guard. His GPA at the time of nomination was 3.44.

Brian Day (Paramus, N.J./Paramus), who was the captain of the men's swimming team that earned its third-straight Skyline Conference Championship in February, was an all-conference swimmer in the freestyle and backstroke events for the Privateers during the 2009-10 season. He was named to the Skyline men's swimming weekly honor roll during the last week of the regular season for his performance in the squad's victory over NJIT. His GPA at the time of nomination was 3.66.

Men's lacrosse junior Alexander Korb (Islip, N.Y./Islip) played an instrumental role for the Privateers during the 2010 campaign. He was the team's leading goal scorer with 28 goals on the season, while his 35 total points ranked second on the squad. Korb is also a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma National Honor Society. He was twice named to the Skyline Conference weekly honor roll for his efforts on the field for Maritime in the 2010 season. His GPA at the time of nomination was 3.67.

Jorrie Trenkamp (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) was a two-sport athlete at Maritime during the 2009-10 athletic seasons, her first year at the school. She played women's soccer in the fall and was a standout on the pitch for the Privateers during their best season in program history. She also played women's lacrosse in the spring and was a key contributor for Maritime as the program nearly clinched its first-ever playoff appearance. Trenkamp tallied eight goals and one assist for the lacrosse team and finished the year fifth on the squad with nine points. Her 33 ground balls ranked her fourth on the squad. Her GPA at the time of nomination was 3.46.
