THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Feb. 14, 2012) – On Monday, the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) announced the All-Academic honorees for this past 2011 season. Two student-athletes from the Maritime football team were among forty-four players throughout the conference that received the recognition: junior
Martin “Joe” Brown (Huntington Station, N.Y./Huntington) and sophomore
Gary Bigham (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles (Fla.)) (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles).
To be honored, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore academic standing, have participated a minimum of two years with the team and achieved a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30.
This is Brown's second time being named an ECFC All-Academic honoree, as he was also recognized during for his great academic standing during the 2010 season. The junior defensive lineman saw action in seven games this past 2011 season for the Privateers. He recorded one solo tackle on Oct. 15 during a 34-13 home victory over Anna Maria College. Brown is working towards a bachelor's degree in Marine Operations.
Bigham was the Privateers third-leading rusher in 2011 at the fullback position, gaining 229 yards on 51 carries, while scoring five touchdowns. He also caught one pass for 43 yards. His 30 points on the season ranked fourth amongst the Maritime football team. Bigham is a double-major at Maritime, working towards degrees in Marine Transportation-Small Vessel Operations and International Transportation and Trade.
